Protecting all civilians, especially women and girls, is imperative and demands immediate, decisive action

“The ongoing attacks by the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine is a clear and deliberate assault on civilian lives and infrastructure.  Protecting all civilians, especially women and girls, is imperative and demands immediate, decisive action.

Sabine Freizer Gunes, UN Women Representative in Ukraine

UN Women unequivocally condemns the continued attacks and the escalation of violence against civilians and civilian infrastructure over the past week by the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine. These attacks are a grave violation of international humanitarian law, claiming the lives of many innocent people and causing immense suffering and unacceptable harm to civilians, particularly women and girls.

The attack yesterday on Kharkiv killed at least six people, including a girl in a playground and a talented 18-year female artist, and injuring ninety-seven.  This is another example of disregard for international humanitarian law and demonstrates the imperative of ensuring the protection of civilians, especially women and girls.

UN Women Ukraine stands in solidarity with those affected and is committed to the protection of women and girls, working with local partners to address immediate humanitarian needs, and to empower women to lead and contribute to their communities’ resilience and resistance to the Russian aggression, and recovery.
