Russia's attack on Kyiv and other cities on April 13: Ukraine needs a lasting and just peace
Date:
Devastating news reports and images are emerging following last night’s brutal attacks by the Russian Federation against Ukraine.
A woman stands next to her mother’s body in the Sviatoshyno district of Kyiv, which suffered the heaviest damage during last night’s attack: “This is my mother… she was about to turn 85, but she wasn’t planning to die.”
A pregnant woman is being evacuated from a destroyed building in Kyiv. Children were killed. Injured people remain in shock among the ruins of their homes.
Last night, Ukraine endured one of the largest and most prolonged combined attacks by the Russian Armed Forces. The main target was Kyiv.
According to preliminary data from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, 10 people were killed, over 70 were injured, and 31 people — including 5 children — remain hospitalized in the capital alone. There are also casualties and destruction in the Kyiv region, as well as in the Zhytomyr, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Poltava, Khmelnytskyi, Sumy, Donetsk regions, and Zaporizhzhia.
Today’s attack follows a dramatic increase in casualties since the beginning of the year. In March alone, 53 women and 4 girls were killed, while 378 women and 29 girls were injured. Women are being killed as they try to maintain a sense of normalcy and contribute to the economy: 7 women and 2 men were killed on Wednesday when a Russian drone hit the bus that was taking them to work in a factory in the Dnipro region.
UN Women Ukraine condemns the ongoing terror attacks by the Russian Federation against Ukrainian cities and towns.
We join the Humanitarian Coordinator for Ukraine, Matthias Schmale, in calling for the immediate end to the senseless use of force against civilians. Ukraine needs a lasting and just peace. Russia must be held accountable for its crimes.
