UN WOMEN UKRAINE STATEMENT: 7 SEPTEMBER 2025

Date:

A woman and her newborn baby were amongst those killed in Kyiv, Ukraine during a massive attack by the Russian armed forces on 7 September. Another woman was seriously injured in the strikes, and after being induced into labor, gave birth to a son, according to local media. Kyiv’s mayor also reported that an elderly woman died in a shelter. Several more women were injured in Kyiv and other cities.

Today’s attacks hit residential premises, a kindergarten, recreational areas, government buildings, and other civilian infrastructure across the country. The Cabinet of Ministers, which houses many governmental offices with which UN Women partners including those of the Prime Minister and the Commissioner for Gender Equality Policy, was also damaged.

Today’s attacks demonstrate again that the invasion of Ukraine is disproportionately affecting women and girls. 94 Ukrainian women were killed in July 2025 alone, the month which set a new record for monthly overall casualties since May 2022. In Kyiv on 28 August at least 12 women and girls were killed, including a 2 year girl. Not only do women face threats to their lives and security, the invasion also limits women’s access to livelihoods, education, healthcare, and participation in decision‑making.

UN Women stands in solidarity with all those affected and who are responding to the attacks, and as part of the UN system in Ukraine, reiterates that civilians and civilian infrastructure are protected under international humanitarian law and must never be a target. As UN Secretary General said on 28 August, it is time for a ceasefire that results in a just, comprehensive and sustainable peace in Ukraine that is in line with the UN Charter, international law and relevant UN resolutions.
